Abo Ruins

Ever since moving to Portales, we have talked about stopping at the Abo Ruins outside of Mountainair, NM.  We finally did that yesterday, thinking we would spend a couple minutes and then go back another time if it was interesting enough. We ended up spending more than a hour and will still go back again. We really only got around the church and then talked to the Park Service employee working there. There is still lots we want to see.

The church, or what’s left of it, was fascinating, though.  We both took a lot of pictures.  This is one I took.  It is looking toward the nave of the church.

The church was built in the early 1600s and the original church was expanded later.  It is amazing that so much of the church remains.  Even more fascinating to me, though, was the fact that the family that lives just down the road from the ruins has owned the land and lived there since the 1800s.  That kind of stability is something that always amazes me!
